The morning is the best part of the day on the Bukit, and the coffee has finally caught up to it. The best coffee in Uluwatu now runs from a Kyoto export with a drive-thru window to a vinyl listening bar hidden behind a surf shop, most of it within a scooter ride of Bingin and Padang-Padang. Here is where we send people for the first flat white of the day, and what to order when they get there.

% Arabica is the one most people already know by the logo. The Kyoto specialty brand put its second Bali store on the Bingin road, a high-ceilinged, bamboo-and-local-wood room by the architects ciguë, with thirty seats inside and a drive-thru window for the surf-and-go crowd. The single-origin espresso and the Kyoto latte are the order. It gets busy, it is built to move you through, and the coffee is consistent to the gram. Open daily from 7am.

Analog is the opposite tempo, and our pick for a slow morning. It hides behind a speakeasy-style entrance off Jalan Labuansait and opens into a warm room of vinyl, vintage speakers and wood panelling, with a small Japanese-inspired garden out the back. The coffee is taken seriously here, and serious coffee drinkers have noticed. Come early, order a filter, and stay for a record. They show new art most months and shape surfboards on site, so the room is never quite the same twice. Open daily from 6.30am.

Pastries, and a flat white to sit with

Café Fleur, tucked in Bingin, is the one for a long laptop hour. It runs an art-and-atelier concept, all fresh flowers and nostalgic music, with homemade croissants, madeleines and chocolatines, an espresso that holds up, and a matcha that locals will argue is the best on the Bukit. There is air-conditioning, there are power outlets, and there is a strawberry matcha made with real fruit worth the order. Open Monday to Saturday, mornings into late afternoon.

Baked is the bakery to build a breakfast around. The Uluwatu branch of the Canggu original does fresh artisanal bread, croissants half the size of your head, an eggs Benedict with gochujang hollandaise and a beef pie that disappears by midday. The coffee is their own, roasted from specialty beans out of Sulawesi and Java. Get there before the good pastries go, which is earlier than you think. Open daily until late afternoon.

The surf-and-brunch institutions

These two are as much a part of Uluwatu as the waves, and the coffee is the reason you stay past one cup.

Suka Espresso has been the Bukit's living room since 2016. It is an Australian-style cafe and restaurant on Labuansait, opposite the path to Thomas Beach, with specialty coffee sourced across Indonesia and roasted in Bali, and an all-day brunch that runs from a truffle scramble to a chilli-and-egg plate everyone seems to order. It is busy, friendly and full of the working-from-Bali crowd. The house drink to try once is the Monkey Business, cocoa, coffee and banana. Open from 7.30am.

Drifter Surf Shop is the one with the most soul. Since 2008 it has been a surf shop, gallery and bookstore with a quiet garden cafe out the back, brewing coffee from Mandailing Estate in Sumatra alongside clean, mostly organic food and cold-pressed juices from an old Norwalk press. Sit among the boards and the books, order a coffee and a juice, and you will understand why people have been coming for the better part of two decades. Open daily from 7am.

The house pours coffee too

When Azoria Living opens in 2027, the coffee bar will be one of the few rooms in the house with no pass and no list at the door, open to anyone who walks in, the same way a good neighbourhood cafe should be. Mediterranean in spirit: an espresso standing at the counter, or a long one on the terrace with the morning still cool.
