The Best Sunset Spots in Uluwatu – Azoria Living

Uluwatu faces west, off the end of Bali, with nothing between the cliffs and the horizon but the Indian Ocean. That geography is the whole appeal: this is the part of the island built for the last hour of the day. The best sunset spots in Uluwatu run from a multi-level bar bolted to the rock above the surf break to a cabana that hangs over the cliff edge, with a public beach and a screens-off wellness deck in between. Here is where to be when the light goes, and when to turn up.

The short version: For the loud, classic sunset, go to Single Fin or Ulu Cliffhouse. For a refined cocktail at the cliff edge, the Alila Sunset Cabana or Mana. For dinner as the sun drops, Abracadabra or Saltwood in Bingin, or live fire at Teja. For something quieter, the wellness deck at The Istana or your feet in the sand at Dreamland. Sunset lands around 6.15 to 6.45pm year round. Arrive an hour early on weekends.

The clifftop institutions

Start with the two everyone names first. Both are loud in the best way and both earn it.

Single Fin is the original Uluwatu sunset, a multi-level bar carved into the cliff at Suluban, directly above the surf break. You watch the surfers trade waves through the afternoon, then the whole place turns to face the horizon as the light drops. The food is honest (burgers, wood-fired pizza), the cocktails are cold, and on Sundays and Wednesdays it becomes the island's biggest sunset party, with DJs and a queue. Come early for a railing seat, or come another night if you want the view without the crowd.

Ulu Cliffhouse, along the Padang-Padang road, is the grown-up version: an adults-only pool club with a long infinity pool facing the waves, an open-fire kitchen leaning coastal Mediterranean, and a soundtrack that rolls from poolside into golden hour. Book a daybed, swim through the afternoon, and stay as the DJs take over at sunset. It is a full day out that happens to end with one of the best views on the Bukit.

A cocktail at the cliff edge

When the point is the drink and the view, not the party, these two are the island's best.

Alila Villas Uluwatu has the Sunset Cabana, and it is the one to see once. A small structure by the architects WOHA, perched slightly over the cliff edge a hundred metres above the sea, built for exactly one thing: artisanal cocktails as the sun goes down over the Indian Ocean. Every Saturday there is live violin at sunset. The dress code is resort elegant and the bar is open to non-guests, so book ahead and arrive with time for a drink before the light. This is the most composed sunset on the Bukit.

Mana Uluwatu, in the grounds of Uluwatu Surf Villas near Suluban, gives you the same clifftop drama in a more relaxed register. There is a formal pavilion of reclaimed teak upstairs and a casual infinity pool below, each with its own menu, and the poolside is the move for sunset: a cocktail in hand, the sea breeze up the cliff, the sky doing the work. Open to outside guests, reservations worth making for a sunset table.

Dinner as the sun goes down

Three clifftop and fire-led kitchens where the meal and the sunset are the same event.

Abracadabra, at Mû Boutique Resort on the Bingin cliffs, is the romantic one. Tables sit right at the cliff's edge with uninterrupted ocean views, and the kitchen turns out organic, seasonal plates, with an OFYR wood barbecue of fresh fish, calamari and prawns for dinner from 5.30pm and proper French pastry to finish. Come for a golden-hour cocktail and stay for the grill. Book ahead; the cliff tables fill first.

Saltwood, also in Bingin, is the considered newcomer, a cliffside place built from natural materials that runs from morning coffee through long lunches into sunset drinks and fire-grilled dinners. The rhythm is the point: a slow afternoon that turns into an evening, a Sunday night BBQ, the smoke and the sea. If you want the new Bingin at its most relaxed, this is it.

Teja, up in Pecatu, is sunset by the fire rather than the view. The name comes from the Sanskrit for the energy of fire and warmth, and the kitchen lives up to it: Modern European, live-fire cooking, premium ingredients and bold simplicity, served in a handcrafted room of raw textures and natural materials. Come for golden hour with wine and music, stay for the flame-cooked plates and a long table of friends. This one is sunset as a dinner, not a backdrop.

Quieter ways to watch

Not every sunset needs a cocktail list. Two of the best are the calmest.

The Istana, on the Suluban cliffs, is a wellness retreat and a deliberate no-phone zone, which makes it one of the few places you will watch the sunset without a single screen in the way. A spa session buys access to the clifftop infinity pool, the saunas and sound dome, the hot and cold plunge pools and the cliff lounge, and you can sit out the golden hour from the water or the deck. For sunset as a reset rather than a scene, nothing else on the Bukit comes close. This is the recovery end of the day, and it pairs with a proper recovery afternoon better than anywhere.

Dreamland Beach, in Pecatu, is the free option and still one of the best. A wide stretch of white sand under tall limestone cliffs, west-facing, with powerful waves and a sandy-bottomed break that beginners can actually surf. There is no booking and no minimum spend, just the walk down, a towel, and the light hitting the cliffs from about 5pm. Bring nothing, watch it properly, and you will understand what the cliff bars are charging for.

The house faces west, too

Azoria Living sits on the same clifftop line, west-facing, with the sunset built into the architecture rather than added as an event. When the house opens in 2027, the last hour of the day will be part of the rhythm: a long table on the terrace, a cold drink, the light going over the water. It is the most Mediterranean thing about the place, and the most Uluwatu.

Until then, the cliffs are open to everyone. Line up a sunset from this list with the rest of a Bukit day, a morning coffee, a surf, a long dinner after the light goes, and you have the shape of a good day in Uluwatu. When you are staying with the house, we will point you to the right cliff for the evening you are after.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to watch the sunset in Uluwatu?
For the big, social sunset, Single Fin at Suluban. For a refined cocktail, the Alila Sunset Cabana. For dinner at the cliff's edge, Abracadabra in Bingin. For a free, quiet one, Dreamland Beach. The right answer depends on whether you want a party, a drink, a dinner or just the view.

What time is sunset in Uluwatu?
Bali sits near the equator, so sunset stays close to 6.15 to 6.45pm all year, shifting only slightly between seasons. Arrive 45 to 60 minutes early at the popular spots, especially on weekends, to get a seat facing the water.

Do you need to book sunset spots in Uluwatu?
For the cliff bars and restaurants, yes, particularly Friday to Sunday in the dry season. Single Fin, the Alila Sunset Cabana, Mana, Abracadabra and Ulu Cliffhouse all take reservations and fill their best tables first. Dreamland Beach needs no booking at all.

Which Uluwatu sunset spot is best for a quiet evening?
The Istana, a clifftop wellness retreat and no-phone zone where a spa session includes the infinity pool and cliff lounge at sunset. Dreamland Beach is the other calm option, with nothing between you and the horizon but sand.

Is Single Fin worth it for sunset?
Yes, once, and ideally not on a Sunday if crowds are not your thing. Single Fin has the original Uluwatu cliff view above the surf break. Sundays and Wednesdays are big party nights; other evenings are far calmer for the same sunset.

The sun sets in the same place every night out here. The only real decision is whether you want a cocktail, a dinner, or just the sand under you while it happens.
